About Us

Just Recovery DC uses the power of progressive tax policy to address the racial inequity and injustice that Black people and other communities of color have endured for generations and continue to experience today.

The campaign began in the spring of 2020, when advocates, organizers, tax policy experts, grassroots organizations, and passionate DC residents came together to raise revenue for a racially and economically equitable recovery from the pandemic.

In 2021, Just Recovery DC scored a big win for racial equity and economic justice when the DC Council voted to raise taxes on DC residents who earn more than a quarter million dollars a year – asking someone who makes $350,000 to pay the equivalent of two cups of coffee a month – and invest that money back into our communities. With these dollars, the District paid for pay increases for early childhood educators, affordable housing, and a cash boost for low-paid workers.

In 2023, Just Recovery DC launched the sub-campaign All in for DC: A Tax System for Justice aimed at raising revenue the District can invest in programs and services that advance racial equity.

Our Core Values

Shared Abundance

Instead of the benefits of economic growth flowing into the pockets of the rich, they should lead to shared prosperity that allows every resident economic security, resources to build wealth, and opportunity to live to their fullest.

We work to remake systems, including the tax code, that were built to ensure white economic dominance at the expense of Black and brown people.

Fairness

Economic Inclusion

Generations of policy and practice blocked people of color from quality education, good jobs, and fair pay. In an inclusive economy, there will be opportunities for all.

Community Care

Our lives and well-being are interconnected and we are stronger when we support each other’s wellness.
